Functional Media was founded by Melanie Burton: FMCA health coach, former clinic manager, and the strategist behind the growth of 1,100+ health practices. She learned health marketing by running the systems it depends on.

Generic marketing doesn’t just underperform in health. It breaks the one thing practices run on: trust.
In 2015, Melanie was inside a busy functional medicine practice: an FMCA health coach and clinic manager, running both the patient experience and the business behind it. She saw daily how carefully that kind of practice builds trust: one conversation, one protocol, one piece of education at a time.
Then the practice hired a generic social media agency, and the system broke in a way no outsider would even notice: the agency cheerfully posted about the benefits of whole grains · while the practice was teaching its patients gluten avoidance. Patients noticed. Trust wobbled.
That agency knew a thing or two about social media. It knew nothing about functional medicine. Functional Media was founded in 2017 to be the opposite: marketing built from inside the industry, by someone fluent in both the clinical side and the strategic one.

Contradictory content from an outside agency confuses patients and erodes clinical trust. The failure that made specialization non-negotiable.
Health-industry-only from day one. Content systems that never contradict the medicine.
From content support into a full strategic consultancy: positioning, infrastructure, content architecture, campaigns and fractional direction.
Nine-plus years, one industry, and a methodology built from everything those practices taught us.
It sounds small. Inside a functional medicine practice, it isn’t. Every piece of content either compounds clinical credibility or quietly erodes it. A generalist agency can’t tell the difference, because the difference is the medicine.
This one contradiction is the entire reason Functional Media exists, and why it will only ever serve one industry.
“We recommend avoiding gluten.”
“Enjoy more whole grains!”

Most health marketers learned the industry from a swipe file. Melanie learned it from the inside: managing a practice, coaching patients, and watching exactly where growth breaks, in the positioning above the content and the structure beneath it.
That dual fluency is what Functional Media is built on, and it’s why the work spans the entire system: from how a practice is positioned, to the infrastructure that converts attention, to the content that builds authority.
